Yorkipoo Attacked by Dog

Background

No one expects to have their dog attacked in their own back yard. But that is what happened to Mary R. and her 7 year old Yorkipoo, Jojo. It would take major surgery and a lot of recovery to save this little pup.

Mary shares Jojo's story:

"I was working in my back yard with my seven year old, 14 lb. Yorkipoo, Jojo. I heard a crash and, within seconds, the Pit Bull from next door had broken through my 6 foot high wooden fence and had Jojo in his mouth. I was able to jump on the dog, but he would not release his hold on Jojo. My neighbor, only 5 feet away, was paralyzed and only able to call 911. I was helpless to stop the attack that seemed to go on forever.

I was told that the owner eventually pulled the dog off of me and Jojo. When I looked up from the ground, it seemed that every neighbor I had was in my back yard. My neighbor handed me Jojo who was bleeding profusely from his stomach. My friend pulled up in her car to take me and Jojo to Connecticut Veterinary Clinic. I held a sweater on his wounds with pressure. Not only did he bleed through that, but my shirt as well.

Upon arriving at the specialty and emergency veterinarian, I was asked if I wanted to euthanize Jojo or have them take extreme measures. I chose to have them do anything possible to save him. It was a three hour surgery to repair his stomach, intestine, and some muscles.

After three days in intensive care, I was told they could keep him for another few days unless I was comfortable rehabbing a dog with special needs. I was there to pick him up in 5 minutes. The fact that he is alive is just short of a miracle.
