Luxating Patella in Toy Poodle
A slip on the steps left Mister Jack with knee problems.
Vet Bill: $2,444
Background
It's not uncommon for puppies to take tumbles. These little balls of energy zoom around the house at breakneck speed as they play, explore, and get into trouble. And, in true puppy fashion, a slip on the steps didn't stop 1-year-old Mister Jack immediately. He got back up and kept on playing like nothing had happened. But a few days later, he stopped using his back leg.
Mister Jack's pet parent, JT, has the full story:
"One of the biggest hurdles I had to overcome when trying to decide if inviting a pet into my home was the right thing or not was the angst I felt about these "HUGE vet bills" I kept hearing about from friends and family. Having never owned a dog or cat, I had no idea how much a "HUGE vet bill" was -- it scared me! Before we decided on the puppy that was right for our home, my partner and I sat down to crunch some numbers for pet insurance costs. When we researched the different carriers, we decided to go with Embrace because of the ease with which we were able to obtain a quote online. Looking back, I don't know if that was the best way to pick; but, man, we picked a good one!
Our Poodle pup was healthy from the get-go, but he had one "slip up" during his early days. While whizzing up the stairs, Mister Jack slipped on a step and took a little tumble. At first, we (and he) brushed it off -- no big deal, he seemed fine! Days later, Mister Jack began limping and after a few weeks he wouldn't use one of his back legs. Well, of course, we panicked. How much was THIS going to cost us? Was this even covered under our policy? Would Embrace consider this a genetic flaw -- sticking us with the bill?
After our first consult, we decided to put Mister Jack under the knife in an effort to correct the issue before he reached maturity. He underwent a customized surgery to correct his Grade III medial patellar luxation and lateral patellar luxation. While Mister Jack was recovering, we began the claims process with Embrace. It was a breeze and less than 30 days from the date of surgery Embrace had processed our refund.
Since this incident, we have had a few minor insurance needs -- all with 5-star service from Embrace. The angst we once had has long-since passed. The confidence we have with Embrace has been so immense that we recently welcomed another Poodle pup, Miss Mary, into our home.
One of my favorite things now, after having furry children, is the love and affection they show for me. There really is nothing like the feeling of being Embraced."
