Flat-Coated Retriever's Mystery Illness

Shadow, a 7 year old Flat-Coated Retriever, first showed signs of illness on Mother's Day. When it happened again, just six weeks later, they had to be more aggressive with his treatment.

Shadow's pet parent, Laura P., shares his story:

"Shadow refused his Jillcookies treat the night before Mother's Day. I knew something was really wrong by the next morning. The ER vet said his temperature was 106 and white blood cell count was almost nonexistent. After spending the night there, he came home with antibiotics.

About six weeks later, the same thing happened. A full tick panel, blood tests, sonograms, and x-rays were done. We were told it was a possible bone marrow disease or autoimmune-mediated disease and the vet wanted his bone marrow to test. Another vet we saw recommended a stronger antibiotic and a longer dosage (three weeks). He felt it may be a hard-to-kill infection or a false-negative tick panel.

We are happy to report, four months later, Shadow is doing great. He is back to his happy-go-lucky Flat-Coated self. I can't begin to express how comforted we were to have Embrace Pet Insurance.
