Gastric Dilatation Volvulus (Bloat) in a Standard Poodle
Fresco was lucky. His pet parent knew the signs of bloat and took him to the ER immediately.
Vet Bill: $4,570
Background
Gastric dilatation volvulus, or bloat, is a life-threatening condition that happens when the stomach twists and fills with gas or fills with gas then twists. Knowing the symptoms is critical to saving your pet's life, because things can go from bad to worse very quickly and surgery is required to correct the issue. Luckily, when Ashley H. saw the signs in her 3 year old Standard Poodle, Fresco, she took him to the emergency veterinarian immediately.
Ashley shares Fresco's story:
"It was a terrifying experience. I knew the symptoms of bloat and we were able to get him to the vet right away, but I never imagined it could become life-threatening that rapidly. We are very lucky to live 5 minutes from the emergency vet, otherwise I don't think Fresco would still be here with us. He was back to himself pretty quickly after surgery, but had to stay on a leash for several weeks. When he finally got the go ahead to run free, he was thrilled. The squirrels, not so much. We have our goofy clown of a dog back and we couldn't be happier.
Thank you so much for checking on him and for the great coverage. I recommend you guys to everyone and I won't ever be without pet insurance again. Of course I'd spend all of my money to save my dog and max out all of my cards, but it was comforting to know that this didn't have to be a huge concern. While my dog was dying in front of me, I didn't have to wait to read the estimate or figure out where this money would come from. I just had to give the easy answer, "Yes, save my dog's life." You guys are great, thank you so much!"
